new artwork by Mikaela Frank July 2012

Here is some new art from the artists in the studio.

This is a piece done in class by artist Amy Nelson. Amy mastered the technique well and in a style true to her, she has created these cherry blossoms.

Good job, Miss Amy.

I told Brittany Holshouser in class the night I critiqued her work that it has an academic look to it. Likely because she had both letters and numerals in her art.

The clear blue that she chose gives it the look of having been created on a blue print when she used the white overcoating of paint.

The oranges work well for her as a complementary color statement. She created her oranges using a glass bead polymer.
Brittany is 12.

The use of timepieces in art

Picture
It has become very popular in contemporary art to use clocks and such. In this case, Ruthi Coats piece really reflects the happenings in her life. She had posted on facebook about how the girls were missing her while she was at the studio, but, Ruthi, the studio is your TIME.  The photography of this piece is sadly very dark. Her actual artwork is dark, but not this dark. Nice color choices.

Another young artist...

When Hannah Brewster was creating this piece, I watched it go from light teal to dark teal to darker yet. I was waiting to see what she had planned. Her leafless tree silhouette is a perfect pairing for this ominous background. I know she is pleased with her work as well she should be. Hannah is 13.

More successful art from the studio.

This is one of those pieces of art that changed it's look as the artist progressed. This is Shelly Allen's creation done in beautiful mauve/purple/pink colors.
The details and subject added in indigo was a good decision. There is something very fun about this piece that she intends to add the word "feadders" because that is how her daughter says feathers.

Introductory Drawing: Ages 16-Adult

Above.  Here is a perfect example of the kind of work now being created by students that are enrolled in the Adult Introductory Drawing Class that meets on Monday evening. Artwork shown here is by Laura W. These grapes are done in graphite.

Here is an example of artwork created during an exercise students performed during the second week of class.  Basic elements of art: line, shape and form are practiced through a variety of mediums and techniques. Artwork shown was produced by Carol T.

In this image you will find another pear created by a student from the Adult Intro Drawing Class. This artwork is created by using charcoal on rosado paper.  It is rich tone on rich colored paper. Students are taught that at this point it is more to gain good art habits and understand techniques than anything else. This artwork is done by Ann Marie S. one of our dedicated students.

Ask any of the students what it means to do reverse drawing? how to use their eraser as a tool?  (ask about erasers in general!) what inside out technique is for? what is rosado paper? what elements does one need to produce a shadow?  Students are learning that there are many many different techniques and for what application they are used. This teaches students to recognize why something worked for them and how to recreate that success over and over again. It also clears up why something isn't working for them, too. Solid art skills that you can build on and count on everytime are an important key to successful artwork.
